  1. Unofficial HIARCS Patches (Set 1.0B)-  for Hiarcs 1.0 and  Hiarcs 1.0 Demo   2/25/96

  3. Use these patches at your own risk - no warranty express or implied.
  4. Use only on copies of your files - and keep unmodified backups of the originals.
  5.  
  6. The publisher of HIARCS has nothing to do with these patches.
  7. They are not official, nor endorsed by the publisher of HIARCS.
  8.  
  9. They are, however, free :). Feel free to upload them elsewhere, as long as you keep
  10. them unmodified, and with this README file and the other files.
  11.  
  12. The purpose of these patchers is only to make some interface changes that, it is hoped, will make HIARCS more comfortable for some. In particular:

  14. - The board dark square pattern is changed. B&W viewing should be much better.
  15.    This new pattern is only mildly different from the original in 256-color (though I prefer it)
  16.    In black & white, it is infinitely better than the pattern from the original
  17.    "Unofficial HIARCS Patches" for HIARCS 1.0
  18.  
  19. - More keyboard shortcuts are added for the menu commands, which should help.

  21. There are two changes that apply only to the patcher for the non-demo HIARCS:
  22.  
  23. - the opening splash screen will not appear .
  24.    The same info appears under the Apple menu in "About HIARCS" .
  25.    I suspect you're willing not to see it every time you launch HIARCS.
  26.  
  27. - HIARCS is made multifinder-aware.
  28.    This means that HIARCS continues to think if you have another application in front.
  29.    The unmodified HIARCS will pause until you bring it in front again.
  30.    I gave the modified HIARCS a problem while I wrote this, and it took 60% longer than
  31.    it did running in foreground. In theory, this change might make it run slower
  32.    in the foreground, but in the two tests I did, it ran just as fast as the original
  33.    in one case (no other apps open), and 20% FASTER than the original in the other
  34.    case (SimpleText open in the background). So, go figure. It might run slower than
  35.    the unmodified version in some cases.

  37. Instructions:
  38. - double-click the patcher for the version you wish to modify.
  39. - tell it where a copy of the unmodified file is.
  40.    [ I don't _think_ it will change the original file, but it might.].

  44. This patcher is to be used on a copy of the HIARCS demo, which is available from:

  56. If you have problems:
  57. 1) I did say this was at your own risk - you did keep locked, unmodified, backups - right?
  58. 2) If you're getting a window called "console", that says "*** error 151 ***", HIARCS
  59.     could not find the folder "HIARCS files" in the same folder it was in.
  60. 3) email me - I might (no promises) do something about it.
